Children with communication difficulties have unique needs when it comes to learning. They require additional support for understanding language and varying methods for expressing it. Standard curriculum materials used in today's classrooms are not designed for the needs of these special students. AAC Innovations, LLC. has developed the research-based Symphony Learning Program, a set of adapted book "kits" to address the communication and academic needs of students with challenging learning styles. Using standard children's literature, the kits target state required academic skills while maintaining a communication focus. This allows for continual practice of language skills while learning math, science, social studies, art, reading, music, and daily routines.
These kits focus on using targeted vocabulary and concepts throughout a student's learning experience. At the same time, each kit is designed to look the same so that the student does not have to interpret the informational format. For example, each spelling worksheet will have the same layout, but will have different words. By doing this, the student does not need to learn how to learn, but can focus on what to learn. Varying levels of student ability are represented in each kit so that teachers and therapists can differentiate instruction appropriately while still maintaining a continuity of teaching in the classroom.
